Analyse how the writer shows that the same thing can be experienced in different ways

In the non-fiction text, ‘The power of the Mind’ by Malcolm Gunn, the writer uses contrast and adjectives to show the reader that the same thing can be experienced in different ways, through the contrasting perspectives of the writer and also that of his wife G, on the Guatemalan rainforest by adding contrast and emotion to the adjectives when describing him and his wife G’s perspectives.

The writer contrasts the two’s perspective of the Guatemalan forest. shown by the quote, “A sinister mist, blood-red in the sunset.” stated from the view of G, uses harsh adjectives to describe the Guatemalan forest, like how she describes the mist as being “sinister” which tells the reader that G is experiencing the forest as a dangerous and deadly place. Whereas the quote, “A soft mist rose from the rainforest below.” said from the view of the writer, contrasts G’s view on the mist as it uses gentle adjectives to describe the forest, like how he describes the mist as “soft”, this tells the reader that the writer is experiencing the forest as a peaceful and tranquil environment.

People develop perspectives because of experiences during their childhood which shape the way they end up viewing the world and situations. So, G probably either has had a bad experience with forests or has never experienced that type of situation before and so her perspective is altered and affected by this. Which is why her perspective is focused in on aspects of the location that she views to be dangerous and is why she describes the Guatemalan rainforest as “straight out of a horror movie.” and why the writer states that “This was G’s nightmare.”

The writer, however, contrasts G’s perspective by stating “for a wildlife fanatic like me”. This shows how obsessed he is with the wildlife and with it, the sort of location they are in, so he is probably used to the wild and being near wildlife. which is why his perspective on the Guatemalan rainforest is happy and positive with him stating “this was as good as it gets!”

So by contrasting the two’s perspectives on the same location and by adding emotion to the adjectives, it shows the reader how the same thing can be experienced in different ways.

Analyse how the writer sees personal value in taking a photograph

In the Prose ‘Why Not?” by Catherine Norman, the language techniques of dialogue, metaphor and verb use show the personal value in taking a photograph.

The writer uses personification of the Tuesday morning, shown by the quote, “this Tuesday morning is sitting in my pocket now, safe from time” describes the Tuesday morning as living and that it can age with time, so by taking a photograph of the Tuesday morning it will be safe, stored in a gilded crystal frame on my desk”. This shows the personal value in taking a photograph as it will be kept safe forever and will never be forgotten. as she states “Memories slip away with time, But photographs, they’re permanent”, she sees value in taking photographs as when she is old the memories are safe.
